Season Notes:
1975-1976: The "Sophomore Surge". A young Norseman team went 3-4 finishing 5th in the Dairyland Conference. Six Sophomores led the youth movement in a rebuilding year for the program. Coach Mike Kelley enjoyed performances from Jim Bautch (6-1 Conf), Mark Koxlien (5-2 Conf), Pete Olson (5-2 Conf) and Connie Gromoff (4-2-1 Conf) In this era of only one high school division (school size did not matter). Tony Smith played his senior on a blown knee. His last career match was a pin over Hong of Osseo-Fairchild. Smith gets knee surgery the following week missing the WIAA tournament series. Coach Kelley told the Whitehall Times he felt his team was a third place contender for conference.
Before the WIAA tournament series, Coach Kelley felt six Norsemen had the ability to get through the sub-regional, and three Norse had a chance of going deep in the post season. There was a Thursday sub-regional where the top two winners would wrestle a Saturday regional qualifier to continue on in the State Tourney. This was the era of Iron Men. Pete Olson and Connie Gromoff were Regional Qualifiers (Wrestlers had to win a sub-regional in this era to wrestle in the regionals) this season.
At this time there were 11 eighth grade wrestlers in the Junior High program and several of them were projected to break into the varsity line up in 1976-1977.
